No dentist wants to remove a tooth that can be saved. Sometimes, though, extraction is the healthiest option, such as for a tooth broken below the gumline, a severe infection, or advanced gum disease. This guide covers tooth extraction in Rawalpindi: the cost, what happens on the day, and how to heal well afterwards. If your question is about wisdom teeth, see our wisdom tooth removal guide.

When is a tooth extraction needed?

  • Decay or a fracture so extensive the tooth can’t be restored
  • Infection that hasn’t responded to root canal treatment
  • Teeth loosened by advanced gum disease
  • Crowding before orthodontic treatment
  • Baby teeth that haven’t fallen out on time

We always discuss alternatives first. A tooth that can be saved usually should be.

What happens during an extraction

  1. The area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic. You’ll feel pressure, but not pain.
  2. The tooth is gently loosened and removed. A surgical extraction may need a small incision or the tooth sectioned into pieces.
  3. Gauze is placed to help a blood clot form. Stitches are used if needed.

A simple extraction usually takes 20–40 minutes.

Recovery and aftercare

The first 24 hours

  • Bite on the gauze for 30–45 minutes
  • Don’t rinse, spit forcefully or use a straw, so the clot isn’t disturbed
  • Avoid smoking, which raises the risk of dry socket
  • Eat soft, cool food and chew on the other side

From day 2

  • Rinse gently with warm salt water after meals
  • Brush normally, avoiding the socket itself
  • Take painkillers as advised

Most people feel back to normal within 3–4 days. Call us if pain gets worse after day 3, bleeding won’t stop, or swelling increases. These can be signs of dry socket or infection.

What to eat after a tooth extraction

For the first two to three days, choose soft, cool or lukewarm foods that need little chewing:

  • Yoghurt, raita or lassi
  • Soft khichdi, daal or mashed potatoes
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Soup that has cooled down
  • Bananas or other soft fruit

Avoid hot drinks, spicy food, nuts and anything crunchy until the area feels comfortable, and chew on the other side.

Replacing the missing tooth

A gap can let neighbouring teeth drift and affect your bite over time. Options include a dental implant, a bridge or a denture. We explain the differences in implants vs dentures. If you’re planning an implant, ask about it before the extraction, as the site sometimes needs bone grafting.

Frequently Asked Questions — Tooth Extraction in Rawalpindi

Does tooth extraction hurt?

The area is numbed first, so you should feel pressure but not pain. Some soreness for a few days afterwards is normal.

Can I go to work the next day?

After a simple extraction, most people can. After a surgical extraction, plan for a day of rest.

What is a dry socket?

It’s when the blood clot is lost from the socket, exposing the bone. It causes worsening pain 2–4 days after the extraction and needs a dental visit to treat.
