If you have a chipped tooth, a small gap or uneven edges, two cosmetic options usually come up, and patients often ask us about dental bonding vs veneers. Both can make a big difference, but they differ in cost, durability and how much of your natural tooth is involved. Here is how to decide.

What is dental bonding?

Bonding uses tooth-coloured composite resin, applied directly to the tooth and sculpted by hand in a single visit. Little or no drilling is needed, so it is fully or mostly reversible.

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin shells, usually porcelain (such as E-max), custom-made in a lab and bonded to the front of the teeth. A thin layer of enamel is usually removed so they sit naturally, which makes the treatment permanent. Composite veneers are a lower-cost middle option. See our veneers cost guide for details.

When bonding is the better choice

  • A single small chip or a worn edge
  • A small gap between front teeth
  • Younger patients, where keeping enamel is a priority
  • A lower budget, or a trial before committing to veneers

When veneers are the better choice

  • Several teeth need changes in shape, size or colour
  • Deep staining that whitening can’t lift
  • You want a long-lasting result with high stain resistance
  • As part of a full smile makeover

Closing a gap between front teeth

A small gap between the two front teeth is one of the most common reasons people ask about bonding or veneers. For a narrow gap, bonding can often close it in a single visit by adding a little composite to the sides of both teeth. For a wider gap, or when the teeth are also uneven or discoloured, veneers usually give a more even, longer-lasting result. Where the gap is very large or the bite is involved, clear aligners may be the better first step.

Caring for bonding or veneers

  • Brush twice daily and clean between your teeth
  • Avoid biting nails, pens or ice
  • Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth
  • Keep up regular checkups and polishing

What Dr. Maryam considers

Before recommending either option, Dr. Maryam Bangash checks your bite, gum health, any grinding habit and how your teeth look when you smile and speak. Sometimes the best plan combines treatments, such as whitening first, then bonding one tooth to match.

Frequently Asked Questions — Dental Bonding vs Veneers

Does bonding damage teeth?

No. Bonding needs little or no removal of tooth structure, and it can be polished off or redone later.

Can bonding be whitened?

No. Composite doesn’t respond to whitening, so whiten first if you’re planning both.

Are veneers permanent?

Porcelain veneers usually involve removing a thin layer of enamel, so the tooth will always need a covering. Plan with that in mind.

How long does bonding take?

Usually 30–60 minutes per tooth, finished in one visit.
