A filling repairs a tooth damaged by decay and stops the cavity from getting bigger. Today, most fillings are tooth colored fillings made of composite resin, rather than silver amalgam. Composite blends in with your natural teeth and bonds directly to the tooth, so less healthy tooth needs to be removed.

Signs you may need a filling

  • Sensitivity to sweet, hot or cold food and drinks
  • A dark spot, hole or rough edge you can feel with your tongue
  • Food repeatedly getting stuck in one place
  • A broken or chipped old filling

Small cavities often have no symptoms at all, which is why checkups and X-rays matter. Catching decay early keeps fillings small and affordable.

If a cavity is very large or has reached the nerve, a filling may not be enough. You might need root canal treatment or a crown instead. We’ll explain this before starting.

Do tooth colored fillings look natural?

Yes. Composite comes in many shades, and the dentist matches it to the colour of your tooth before placing it. Once it is shaped and polished, a well-placed composite filling is very hard to spot, even on front teeth.

Composite can pick up stains over time from tea, coffee and smoking, just like natural teeth. Regular cleaning and polishing at your checkups helps it stay bright.

The filling procedure

  1. The tooth is numbed if needed. Small fillings sometimes don’t need anaesthetic.
  2. Decay is removed and the tooth is cleaned.
  3. Composite is placed in thin layers and hardened with a curing light.
  4. The filling is shaped and polished to fit your bite.

Most fillings are completed in one visit of 30–60 minutes.

Caring for a new filling in the first 24 hours

  • If your bite feels high or uneven, call us so we can adjust it

Making your filling last

  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth

  • Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth
  • Keep up regular checkups so wear is caught early

Frequently Asked Questions — Tooth-Coloured Fillings

Can I eat after a composite filling?

Yes. Composite sets fully under the curing light. Wait until the numbness wears off so you don’t bite your cheek.

Is it normal for a filled tooth to feel sensitive?

Mild sensitivity for a week or two is common. If it lasts longer, or the bite feels high, let us know and we’ll adjust it.

Should I replace my old silver fillings?

Only if they are cracked, leaking or decayed underneath, or if appearance matters to you. Intact amalgam fillings don’t need replacing just because they are silver.
